Cut simple, white bed sheets and make them into cushions. Make folds and swags and sew along the edges to achieve a sculpted look, backing the cushions with sumptuous fake fur. Shape your existing curtains in the same way to look like togas.

Metallic stripes
After painting the main wall colour, apply some low tack masking tape to create the desired stripes and paint them using metallic paints.

Pop art table
Paint over an existing table with black gloss water-based eggshell. Stick neoprene square tiles on the top in various bright, snooker ball colours to give a checkerboard effect. Bolt a clear acrylic top onto the table (inside the lip) with mirror screws.

Andy Warhol Pictures
Take some head and shoulder shots. Scan them into a computer. Manipulate them using photo editing software, adding different colours. Take the disc to a specialist printing shop and print on A3 paper. Mount the pictures in clear, glass clip frames.

Funky art
To compliment the pictures, create a funky 3-dimensional piece of art by glue gunning large silver Christmas baubles onto a 3mm thick clear acrylic sheet (130cm x 60cm). Screw it directly onto the chimney breast wall in the dining area with mirror screws.

Chandelier
Pierce some spray painted ping pong balls with a needle, thread some fishing wire through them, tie a knot at the bottom and then attach them to an MDF dish. Replace an existing light shade with an aluminium pendant light shade.

Shelving unit
Add MDF sides and two doors to an existing shelving unit. Cover the door fronts with 39cm squared hardboard tiles, wadding and white PVC. Construct a simple MDF cupboard to sit under the shelving unit. Paint it white and cut out holes for handles.

Roller blinds
Using a circle cutter, cut large circles into two outside blinds. Hang two more blinds underneath these to a give a subtle finish, and so both can be hung independently. Re-upholster the existing sofas in a red cotton/wool mix.

Floor lights
Make three floor lights. Using simple lamps as a base, surround them with a cone-shaped sheet of colour polypropylene in different colours. To join the edges, drill holes through the polypropylene and secure them with chrome butterfly clips.

Fix castors onto the bottom of a square-shaped toy box made from 18mm MDF. The box should fit neatly underneath the bottom shelf of the main storage cupboard.

Existing cupboards
These can easily be revamped with ivory cream matt emulsion. Cover the front door panels with a base coat of Orchard Green paint, then use a crackle glaze effect on top.

Dining table and chairs
Brighten up old wooden furniture by sanding, priming and painting it a matching ivory colour.

Ottoman
Give a simple flat pack ottoman a new lease of life with a decoupage top, made with feathery green skeleton leaves.

Handles
Add chunky metal bar handles to the existing cupboards and newly built storage cupboard.

Lighting
Install a chrome spotlight and flexible spots to illuminate various areas of the room. Place battery lights underneath the shelf above the computer workstation.

Window dressing
Drape voile across the window for privacy, and hang contrasting coloured muslin tab top curtains.

Wall art
Paint simple MDF squares in contrasting yellow colours and hang them on the wall, above the dining table.

Storage cabinet
To conceal you hi-fi and television, make a TV cabinet. Create a cube from MDF with two doors. Paint the structure cream. Cut out the centre of each of the doors and staple Indian style fretwork or cane sheeting to the back.

Chest of drawers
Sand down your existing chest of drawers to remove any varnished surfaces. Cover the body of the chest with a primer, leaving the top shelf wood. Paint the chest cream and seal the top with a honey varnish. Attach small silver handles to each drawer.

Chairs and table
Paint your chairs and table following the steps for the chest of drawers. Dress the table with coir place mats and bold blue china. Fill a vase with long sticks of green bamboo and place in the centre of the table.

Blind
To soften the light entering your living room dress your window with cream fabric Venetian blinds.

Accessories
Fill you shelves and surfaces with chrome vases and trinkets, blue candles and terracotta pots. Use big green leafy houseplants, fresh bamboo and white lilies around the room to add colour.

Curtains
It can be difficult to find curtains to fit a long window. You can adapt short curtains by adding a length of material onto the bottom of the existing curtains. Use two colours to correspond with the rest of the room.

Funky Wall Hanging
To make a bare wall space interesting, collect some fun and colourful postcards from restaurants, clubs and pubs. Laminate them and pierce holes at either end of each card. String each one together with white cotton and hang from the ceiling.

Finishing touches
Complete the room by dressing with wicker baskets, candles and little boxes.

Top Tip
Use low tack masking tape when marking out stripes for paint effects around the bedroom walls. Remove the tape by peeling it downwards off the walls.

If you have lumps in your paint, simply sieve the mixture through a pair of tights.

Add colour to any plain cushion covers by using any fabric remnants. Stick a band, square or suitable shape to cushion cover.

Urban Graphic Living Room

Walls

Make a simple MDF box glued together at the sides. Drill small holes all over and push red Christmas lights through each hole.

Radiator cover
Continuing the idea from the light box, make a large box to cover the radiator, drill small holes and then push red lights through each hole.

Canvases
Transfer images onto small canvases using an image transfer solution or transfer paper.

Table lamp
Invest in a lampshade that has two layers of clear acrylic. Slide images between the layers and then when the light is on, the images will be projected around the room.

Coffee table
Make a funky and bright coffee table. Simple overlap rectangles of different coloured perspex in a random pattern and then sandwich these between two layers of glass to make coffee table with a fantastic effect.

Flooring
Get a dramatic effect by covering the floor with a brightly striped rug. Make large floor cushions from fabrics that compliment the look of the room. This will help soften the design and create extra seating in the room.

Design has been influenced and inspired by local geography of the region, namely Ramat Yishay, a city in the valley of el-Yezre in northern Israel.

The rolling fields that surround the restaurant are found to be continued in the restaurant’s ceiling, which is built of thirty-six steel contoured structures, and covered by painted wood.

The chairs and the wide windows are decorated in plant motives to enforce the connection with the surrounding scenery. When night falls, the lighting, which is between the ceiling beams, forms a warm and somewhat mysterious, atmosphere.

Fabric touches
To give the room an Indian feel, why not use some stunning Indian fabrics? Choose shimmering gold and red sari fabric for a table runner and some floaty silver for the curtains.

Sofas

It is not only the space where ‘organic principle’ and ‘inorganic principle’ stay together, but it represents the modern society consists of real and virtual environments.

The ‘organic principle’ consists of curved lines that create a space characteristic of a cave which is the various space that people can discover their own place to stay depending on each purpose and feeling while the different scenes unfold continually. We attempted to create a space that people feel like snuggling up to the organic form that curves based on human body dimensions. Visitors do not hesitate to enter the store because of the sense of closeness.

On the other hand, ‘Inorganic principle’ consists of white wall surface fixtures, neon tubes of ceiling illumination and mortar floor creates virtual character. We used the lines which let neon tubes and the prevention of crack seam of mortar offset the forms of the wall surface fixtures. They stimulate curiosity of the visitors by synergy with the forms of the fixtures and lead them to the inner part of the narrow space.

Faber’s roots are in the Dutch province of Friesland where in 1844, Jan Gerrits Faber established a blacksmith’s shop.

In addition to fireplaces, the business also made bicycles, skates, hay and straw balers, beet cutting machines and safes.

When natural gas was discovered at nearby Slochteren in the sixties, fireplaces became all the rage.

For Faber, this provided sufficient reason to concentrate its efforts on the design and production of quality gas fires.

The business gradually developed into market leader in the field of chimney-based fires.

In 1996, Faber launched its very first fires with closed combustion technology, a safe technique which has since been adopted by many other manufacturers.

In 2001, Faber moved from Leeuwarden to its current location in Heerenveen.

The site includes a stylishly equipped showroom open to the public.

Behind the showroom is a lab, where fires are designed and international homologation tests are carried out.

There is also a factory for final assembly and quality control of all products.

Manchester Square Interior

The Manchester Square offices are the result of a brief to create a ‘high impact, 21st century office interior with a strong personality’ with more in common with a gentlemen’s club than a traditional office space.

Although the property was made up of a classic (and Grade II-listed) Georgian townhouse with a former stables and garage mews building to the rear, the client was very open to a sense of contrast for the scheme, favouring a highly contemporary treatment. The inherited interior - also previously an office - was not particularly grand, but any standout details were to be retained (such as marble mosaic floor tiles in the entrance area, a number of marble-inlaid fireplaces and highly detailed ceiling cornicing).

The building has five storeys and the rear mews has two storeys, with the upper ground mews floor corresponding to the ground floor of the main space. The original connection between the two was via an open courtyard, which SHH have now partly built over to form a covered walkway between the two for all-weather access. The new project remit covered the Upper Ground floor of the mews and the ground, first and second floors of the townhouse building (with the third storey retained for possible further expansion). ‘The spaces benefit from good natural light’, commented SHH Project Designer Brendan Heath, ‘with typical tall Georgian windows to the front and a double aspect thanks to the rear courtyard. Ceiling heights at the front of the building are also spectacular - between 3.6 and 3.8m’.

The newly generous per capita space was exploited with very individual rooms with differing colour saturation and differing degrees of formality - from a breakout room to office space to dramatic meeting spaces. The scheme had to house five company directors and around 20 administrative staff, along with meeting facilities, ranging from a formal space on the ground floor to a videoconferencing room and less formal second floor meeting space, as well as a breakout space. ‘Having worked with client design director Zeljko Popovic before on a previous residential project’, commented Brendan Heath, ‘we had an existing good relationship and knew that we could build on the trust gained in that first project to produce a very contemporary solution for a very design literate client. This was especially useful in view of the fast-track nature of this project: 4 months from the signing of the lease to the moving-in date!’

The scheme begins at the ground floor main entrance, where the existing mosaic flooring was retained and cleaned. For the rest of the flooring on this level and also on the first floor, black-stained white french (FSC-certified) oak was used in a herringbone formation. By the second floor, the age of the existing flooring was more of an issue as significant bowing had occurred. This gave the designers a direction on the design of the second floor meeting room, using a raised ’stage-set’ platform (whilst the videoconferencing room once more uses the black herringbone timber).

‘As the existing rooms did not contain enough detail to make the rooms individually distinctive, decoration had to fulfil that role’, commented Brendan Heath. ‘Colour saturation added the necessary kick with walls and ceilings painted out the same colour in each room, with a different colour per room to create a unique personality and a varying degree of formality. Lighting was also important to help create both a warm and a moody feel with the accent on avoiding over-lighting.’

Accent lighting on the project was provided by Modular and is combined with more dramatic pieces.

The entrance area has walls lined in dark grey velvet drapes to create a theatrical entrance, with the rest of the hall and stairwell painted in a matching dark grey hue all the way up. A bespoke 3.5m long bench to the left of the entrance makes a statement in buttoned leather with marble inserts (whilst functionally concealing a radiator). Two statement contemporary chandeliers are visible from the exterior and are joined by two limited edition copper mirrors, which are equally spectacular, projecting out like blades of light, giving unusual reflections and playing with proportion. The artist produced a series of sketches of ballet dancers morphed with floral motifs, which were then laser-cut onto stainless steel disks, which were fitted into ceiling-mounted projectors.

The reception, to the rear of the ground floor hall space, is all white with one purple wall to create a slightly softer and more welcoming space than the daringly dark remainder of the scheme, with white desking and a giant mirror on the chimney breast; a contemporary take on a baroque frame in opaque acrylic. Swedese white, tree-shaped coathangers add an abstract touch to the space.

The first meeting room is at the front of the main ground floor space. Painted in mid-dark grey, the room features a high-gloss white-sprayed Techno table, eight Eames lobby chairs and a white sculptural credenza by Bross (also used for the first floor office spaces). A second Ingo Dalton projection takes up most of one of the shorter walls in the space, adjacent to one of two corner clusters of four glass drop pendant lights of varied lengths, by Vistosi.

The first floor offices are in pale grey and feature executive desks in black leather and aluminium by Estel, together with white leather chairs by Tacchini and aluminium silver chairs from Interstuhl.

The videoconferencing room has a new wall to house the large plasma screen at its centre, which is surrounded by aluminium leafing, whilst the rest of the room is in a silver wallpaper. The second meeting room, with the raised platform flooring using a woven vinyl floortile, features olive green Arne Jacobsen ‘Oxford’ chairs, set around a Jean-Marie Massaud meeting table from Porro. Three sides of the room are screened with white voiles to enhance the theatrical stage-setting theme, whilst the fourth wall is hung with a Tord Boontje ‘Little Field of Flowers’ felt rug from Nani Marquina.

One of the richest-coloured spaces in the scheme is the final room: the breakout room, in dark chocolate brown. Here, SHH raised the wallpanels to 1500mm to allow more detail, with hand-painted wood in chocolate brown and wallpaper above the panels in brown and gold. The room contains a deliberately eclectic mix of furniture, from the classic Cité armchair by Jean Prouvé (manufactured by Vitra), to vintage 1930’s and 40’s lamps from Sigmar London, a sleek credenza from Italian manufacturer Acerbis to a large studded leather pouff from DePadova.

Padded headboard
Cut 12 squares, 12x12 inches out of MDF and cover with foam and then fabric. Secure in place with glue and staples. Fit the squares into a large frame made from recycled skirting board gilded silver. Attach to the wall to act as a headboard.

Wardrobe
Paint the wardrobe cream. Paint gilding size on the area you wish to gild. When it is tacky (after about 30 seconds), press on the aluminium leaf and rub over gently. Peel off the backing and then brush over with a make-up brush to remove excess.

Shelves
In an alcove area of the room, screw 2x1 battening onto the walls. Cut shelves from MDF, curving the front of each shelf so it protrudes from the line of the wall. Paint shelves lilac and gild the edges in silver.

Curtains
Make four different panels of voile and/or organza for the window dressing. Use one panel of cotton voile inside for privacy and then hang the voile/organza panels on the outside. Iron the side seams in place with a low heat before sewing.

Accessories
Complete the room design with silver or pewter picture frames, small lilac candles, purple fabric flowers, soft cream paper light shades, sheepskin throws and white patterned cushions.

Top Tip
Making right angles - Always use an angle finder when putting shelves into a cupboard. It's easy to think you have the angles at 90 degrees but in reality you probably haven't and the shelves will look uneven and messy.

Cleaning paint rollers - When you come to wash paint rollers, first get a knife or paint scraper and scrape down the roller a few times. You'll get far more paint off this way and washing the rest will be much easier.

Create a four-sided, cuboid frame out of 5cm x 2.5cm (2in x 1in) wood and paint with pale blue, eggshell paint. Stretch stained wicker over the panels as with the bedhead.

Chair makeover
Buy an old chair, sand and prime, then paint with the pale blue, eggshell paint. Re-upholster with a piece of old curtain fabric, which has been dyed a gold colour using dark brown fabric dye. Use curtain tape to hide the staples.

Wardrobe artwork
Remove the moulded frames of tired built-in wardrobes. Paint them the same as the walls so they disappear. Attach four large, framed canvasses and paint an abstract Mediterranean harbour scene. When the doors are closed, it will appear as two paintings.

Fabric headboard
Cut six squares of MDF. Cover in wadding and then cover in crisp, white linen. Staple to fasten. Arrange at the head of the bed in a section of six, and attach with male and female clips.

Dressing mirror
Make a Venetian-style mirror from a timber or MDF frame, cover in mirror acrylic and attach to the wall.

Upholstered bedside tables
Adapt two bedside tables by applying the same method as the headboard. Fasten blocks of wood to the front of the drawers, then upholster the handles. Add mirror acrylic tops to both tables.

Shutters
Make six plantation shutters to fit in the window. Make a floor-to-ceiling timber frame, with four bespoke pivotal shutters. The blades should be about 9cm (3.5in) wide and fixed sloping down. The MDF should be 0.5cm (0.25in) thick.

Start by using an MDF square with a raised lip on the top edge. Fix some low screw legs onto the bottom. Clad in plaster of Paris bandages to look like a rock, with a flat top. Paint to look like stone.

Plaque
Line the bottom of a box file with modelling clay. Press plastic letters into the clay facing upwards. Pour plaster of Paris over it, add a wire hanging hook and allow to dry.
